There has been a lot of debate about the accuracy of this Wall Street Journal Article suggesting that Google is negotiating for preferential treatment in violation of the spirit of net neutrality. It seems like the WSJ essentially got it wrong but I don’t think it was a total loss. This was the first time I really had a chance to listen to Lessig’s specific position on the subject of neutrality and I have to say I disagree.
Essentially Lessig is not against “tiering” he’s just against the discriminatory pricing of “tieried access”. Personally I think once we let the proverbial genie out of the bottle there will be no way to effectively prevent discriminatory access tiering. All bits should be treated equal, period.
